Cobalt Creative Begins Long-Planned Reorganization and Downsizing
January 24, 2002
Oakland, Calif. - Last week, Cobalt Creative began implementing a long-planned
reorganization of its Oakland, California headquarters. "As it was for many
firms in the Bay area and nationally, 2001 was a tough year for us," notes
Cobalt CEO J. Arthur Sobul. "And while we're working
aggressively to return to the astounding levels we achieved in Y2K, it is still
necessary to make some changes."
Cobalt will be implementing the reorg incrementally. The first move was to downsize
from a huge, black four-drawer filing cabinet to a two-drawer cabinet that will fit
nicely under the desk. In its place, Cobalt has added a nice, narrow five-shelf book
case, which will free up space in other areas.
"Man, it's amazing how much brighter it is in the work space with that behemoth
gone," says Cobalt creative director "Sir" Geoffrey Sobul. "That thing was like
a big black whole sucking all the light into it."
The only dissenting comments among the staff came from staff Artiste Raven.
"I loved that filing cabinet. It was so dark! I wanted everything in the room
to be dark. The walls, the carpet, the lighting. Everything dark! Those bastards!"
Future downsizing plans call for the replacement of the futon in the conference
area with a sofa that will open up more space in the room. In addition, a
large bookcase will be replaced by a smaller, more tasteful shelf unit.
"I really think these changes will go a long way toward improving the
feng shui of the space, you dig?" notes CD "Sir" Geoffrey.
"Despite all the necessary downsizing," CEO J. Arthur Sobul adds, "I'm proud to
say that, unlike many other firms in the industry, we have not, and have no
plans to reduce our staff size in the foreseeable future."
Cobalt Creative was established Labor Day weekend, 1997, in Kansas City, MO.
The company moved to the Bay area around Independence Day weekend, 1999. To
